Bike paint designs from frames we have actually painted

Every design below is a real job, photographed in our shop or the day it left. Each one has a short note on how the look was built, because what a design costs and how long it takes come down to how much of it is masked, sprayed or painted by hand.

If something here is close to what you want, we can paint it on your frame. Start with custom bicycle painting to see how the process works.

Simple bike paint designs

Fades, panels and single custom colors. These are the designs that take the least hand work, which makes them the ones people usually land on first.

Bike paint design: black to white fade on a Trek carbon road frame, photographed in the paint booth

Black to white fade

Trek aero road frame

A fade is the cheapest custom paint design to ask for and the hardest to spray well, because there is no masking line to hide behind. This one runs matte black at the head tube into gloss white at the seat tube, with the Trek wordmark left in white over the dark end.

Custom bicycle paint design: white Specialized SL6 road frame with an orange top tube and blue purple panels

Color-blocked panels

Specialized SL6 road frame

White frame, burnt orange top tube, and a blue and purple flip where the seat stays meet. The design is four masked panels rather than any freehand work, which is why this kind of custom bicycle paint design stays on the affordable end.

Easy bike paint design: deep candy green Specialized SL7 road frame with a shamrock graphic under gloss clear

Candy green over metallic

Specialized SL7 road frame

Candy is a transparent color sprayed over a metallic base, so the base keeps reading through and the frame changes depth as you walk around it. The shamrock is a soft-edged shadow under the clear rather than a decal on top of it.

Road bike art: Canyon Aeroad in custom-mixed metallic Alfa Romeo green with Zipp 808 wheels

Single metallic green

Canyon Aeroad road bike

One color, mixed to match Alfa Romeo Verde Montreal, over the whole frame and fork. A single custom-mixed color is the simplest road bike art there is, and it still looks nothing like a stock frame.

Bike paint design: restored Trek Discovery Channel road frame in blue, black and white team colors

Factory team restoration

Trek Discovery Channel road frame

Not every custom job is a new idea. This is a Discovery Channel team frame put back to the original blue, black and white scheme, with the TREK wordmarks and arrow graphics resprayed rather than replaced with stickers.

One-of-one bike paint designs

Artwork, textures and patterns that only exist on one frame. Everything below was designed for the rider who asked for it.

Custom bicycle paint design: Piet Mondrian style white BH road frame with black grid lines and red, blue and yellow blocks

De Stijl grid

BH road frame

A Piet Mondrian composition mapped onto a frame that curves in every direction, which is the hard part: the black grid lines have to stay straight to the eye as the tube turns away. Each red, blue and yellow block was masked and sprayed on its own.

Bike paint design: Specialized S-Works road frame with green and magenta crackle texture and hand-lettered head tube

Crackle texture under candy

Specialized S-Works road frame

Crackle paint splits as it dries, so the texture underneath is real rather than printed. Here it runs candy green at the top tube into candy magenta at the seat tube, with hand-lettering on the head tube and a splattered fork.

Custom bike paint design: hand-painted blue dragon with red eyes on a black metallic Specialized Chisel frame

Hand-painted artwork

Specialized Chisel frame

The dragon is painted by hand, not stencilled and not a decal. It goes straight onto the black metallic base and then gets buried under clear coat, so you can run a hand over the tube and feel nothing.

Bike paint designs: gold honeycomb pattern over black on a Wilier Triestina road frame with blue to white faded bars

Gold honeycomb over black

Wilier Triestina road frame

Every hexagon is a masked cell, sprayed gold over a deep black base and repeated across the frame, fork and seatpost so the pattern lines up across the joints. The bars were faded blue to white separately.

Custom bicycle paint design: marbled teal and black Scott aero road frame with matching fork, bars and seatpost

Marbled teal

Scott aero road bike

A marbled finish where no two panels repeat, carried across the frame, fork, bars, seatpost and even the cable covers. Matching a random pattern across separate components is the part that takes the time.

Bike paint design: exposed forged carbon gravel frame with gold painted head tube lugs under gloss clear

Exposed forged carbon with gold

Gravel frame with ENVE components

The marbled carbon here is the frame itself, left bare under clear instead of being painted over. The gold is sprayed only on the lug areas, so the finish reads as two materials rather than one paint job.

Mountain bike paint design: Nukeproof Forbes full suspension enduro frame in an abstract multi-color scheme

Abstract multi-color

Nukeproof Forbes enduro frame

Teal, purple, magenta, yellow and red laid over each other in shapes that never repeat, carried around the rocker link and down into the chainstays. A design like this has no straight line to mask against, so the frame gets broken into sections and sprayed in sequence.

Custom bicycle painting: steel Guerciotti road frame with a blue, white and red fade and yellow script logo

Three-color fade on steel

Guerciotti steel road frame

Carbon is not a requirement. This is a steel Guerciotti faded blue to white to red, with the yellow script and the rainbow bands sprayed back on and the Paolo Guerciotti signature returned to the top tube.

Thinking about painting it yourself?

The simple designs on this page are the ones people most often try at home, and a fade or a single custom color is a reasonable first project. Read how a carbon frame gets painted first, particularly the part about the 8 to 20 hours of stripping, then decide.
